After 15 years without releasing new music, Shania Twain spoke to Entertainment Tonight about her struggles, loss, and inspiration for her upcoming album, Now. Here’s what we learned:

She wrote ALL the music for this new album, like a true queen.

“I wrote all of this music myself, so it’s all on me,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “If fans don’t like it, I just have to take that on myself, but it’s worth it, because even if a small amount of people are inspired by it, I’ve done what I set out to do.”

She really struggled over the years with losing her parents, her husband, Mutt Lange, and her voice.

“My divorce was traumatizing to me, my parents dying was the most devastating time of my life. Some things you can’t change. I can’t bring my parents back. My voice will never be exactly what it was before.”

But now, she’s incredibly happy in her marriage to her best friend, Frederic Thiebaud.

“After the divorce phase, Fred was certainly the one to [bring calmness to my life].”

She’s excited about what’s happening in the country genre right now.

“I love so much of what’s going on in music right now, and every genre. I love Kelsea Ballerini. She’s sweet, she’s humble, she’s talented, she writes, so I admire that.”

She’s still a big fan of Taylor Swift.

“She’s a perfect example of ‘I’m still myself, but I’ve changed.’ She’s true to herself, and that’s a spiritual thing. I’m so proud of her.”

Her 15-year-old son, Eja, takes after her because he’s also very passionate about music.

“That’s his passion. He’s a writer and producer.”
